8. Stages in the Evolution of our Earth.Lemurian, Atlantean, Post-Atlantean Epochs
The lecture yesterday covered the steps up to the Lemurian epoch in the evolution of our earth. During that epoch a great cosmic event took place, namely, the exit of the moon from the substance of the earth. The direct result of this was that the right tempo was introduced into the evolution possible for man. In respect of form and temperature the earth at that time was essentially different from what it is today; its temperature was so much higher that contemporary man could not have lived upon it. Gradually the earth densified and solid substances were formed. When in the lecture yesterday it was said that bodies “hardened,” this is not to be understood in the physical sense but as meaning in respect of strength and quality. Certain substances dissolved. The whole earth was in a seething-fluidic state and it solidified only be degrees. But it must not be thought that this means hard and dense in the modern physical sense; it relates only to strength and quality. These forces would have mummified human beings. Out of the seething-fluidic state of the earth, formations resembling islands emerged and the beings living on them were slightly similar to our present animals and plants. During the first half of the Lemurian epoch, man himself did not live actually on the earth but in the sphere above the earth, in a fine, rarefied corporeality; his constitution was much more spiritual. At the beginning of the Lemurian epoch man had not, as yet, his later bodily nature, nor did he take the more solid kind of nourishment. Indeed, even at the end of the Lemurian epoch you would not have found even the densest forms of man's body equipped with bones such as exist today. The substance of man's physical body at that time was still flexible, gelatinous, hardly distinguishable outwardly from the surrounding sub-stance. The souls who had descended to the earth too soon drew this kind of densest substance into their bodies, with the result that then there were living on the earth men whose constitutions were least spiritual, while the others were still living above the earth.
It was only now, during the Lemurian epoch, through the ejection of fine ashes and fiery-fluidic metallic masses, that the first foundation of the mineral kingdom was laid. These masses formed the beginning, as it were, of islands. This is a more pictorial way of expressing it but that is how the process of gradual densification presents itself to clairvoyant sight. Out of these masses there emerged what we may call a plant kingdom and only later on the animal kingdom. It would lead too far if I were to attempt to tell you in detail how the physical world densified. Everything really descended out of higher spheres, including the continents as they densified. But the being who is man today still tarried, as it were, in a sphere above the earth. Men lived within this more ethereal sphere and there developed their finer bodies. The human etheric and astral bodies there were not yet connected strongly with the physical body but were freer from it. With the solidification of the physical body, which now became progressively denser, however, the connection with the etheric and astral bodies became closer. Instead of hovering and floating above the earth, man became a being who now trod the earth itself.
At this time an important influence asserted itself upon man. If there had been no such influence, what would have happened to him? For long, long ages he would have remained a being without initiative, without inner independence, an automaton, propelled by the forces of higher spiritual beings. Forces from the spiritual beings streamed perpetually into his physical, etheric and astral bodies. Among these beings there were some who worked chiefly upon his astral body and had themselves remained backward in their own evolution; these were the luciferic beings. They drew man down to the physical plane more quickly than the good, normally evolved spiritual beings had done.
The luciferic beings were spirits who ought in reality to have completed their task on Old Moon. Had they asserted their influence upon men then, they would have been able to work only upon the astral body for that was the highest member of man's constitution on Old Moon. They were, however, incapable of this because they were retarded beings. Nor could they affect the ego, because on Old Moon they had not known of its existence. The luciferic beings had eventually evolved to the stage of being able to work upon man's astral body, but man himself had meantime progressed and the ego had been membered into him. The luciferic beings could not yet have worked upon the ego; higher beings were doing so, and also upon the astral body, but only through and by way of the ego. These higher beings would not have allowed themselves to work directly upon the astral body, for that was a task they had already accomplished during the Old Moon period. If the luciferic beings had failed to have any influence upon man, the higher beings alone would have worked upon his astral body by way of the ego and so have purified the astral body. Instead of this, however, during the Lemurian epoch the luciferic beings worked directly upon man's astral body from every side and consequently the astral body was exposed to all the influences that should have been worked out on Old Moon. As a result there were implanted into man urges, desires and passions that would not have been his lot if the higher beings alone had worked upon him. The gods would not have allowed these influences to have access to him. The luciferic influence had a twofold effect upon man. Firstly, a certain enthusiasm, a certain zeal could be kindled in him to do one thing or another; but this zeal was not guided by his ego, not influenced by the higher beings working in him. Secondly, it was made possible for him to secede from the higher beings, to do evil, but also to have freedom. Thus, initiative, enthusiasm and freedom for man were due to the luciferic beings but the possibility of doing evil also existed. The luciferic beings insinuated themselves into man's astral body. Fundamentally speaking, this is still the case today; it is they who on the one side make man free and on the other entice him to evil.
Owing to the fact that man's astral body was permeated by the luciferic beings, he was led prematurely down to the earth from the atmosphere above it. For this the luciferic beings are essentially to blame. They were the cause of the deterioration and premature densification of man's astral body; otherwise, he would still have remained for a long time in the atmosphere. This, in the Bible, is called Paradise.
Thus, the expulsion from Paradise was due to the influence of the gods. You should therefore picture the earth in its seething fluid condition and man being led by the luciferic beings too soon down to the earth on which continents were forming. At that time man's astral body still had a far greater influence upon his environment, greater magical powers than were his later on; there was as yet no such drastic separation between the laws of nature and the will of man. In this connection an evil man today would be unable to cause any special damage to nature. He would be incapable of this. In that early period it was different. Evil lusts in the soul of man had a visible, magical effect in nature; they attracted the forces of fire above and on the earth. Through his evil lusts and magic will, man set the forces of nature ablaze. Today this is no longer possible, but at that time fire flashed through the air when men were evil.
Through the wickedness of masses of human beings and the fact that man succumbed too completely to the influence of the luciferic beings and lent himself to evil, the forces of fire in Lemuria were kindled. Thus, Lemuria perished as the result of the raging fires and the wickedness of a large section of its population. The human beings who were saved went to the West, to a continent lying between the present Africa, Europe and America, namely, Atlantis. There the evolution of humanity continued for long, long ages. The number of human beings gradually increased and the souls who had gone to Jupiter, Mars, and so on, during the period of desolation, came down to this continent. The process lasted for a long time. It was thus that the concept of race developed in ancient Atlantis. In occultism it is said that there were human beings in Atlantis whose bodies were inhabited by souls who had previously been on Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and so on. They were called Mars men, Jupiter men, for example. The external forms of the bodies differed for this reason. During the whole first half of Atlantis the texture of the human body was much softer, much more flexible, and yielded to the forces of the soul. These soul forces were essentially more powerful than they are today, and they both shaped and overpowered the physical body. A man of ancient Atlantis would have been able to break a railroad track, let us say, with ease, not because his physical forces were strong, for his bony system had still not developed, but through his magical, psychic forces. A cannon ball, for example, could have been repulsed by this psychic force. The density of flesh developed only later. A similar phenomenon is still to be found today in certain lunatics who on account of the liberation of strong psychic forces—in that condition the physical body is not properly connected with the higher bodies—can lift and throw heavy objects.
Because in Atlantis man's physical body was still pliable, he could more easily adjust himself to processes in the life of soul; the physical stature could be made to decrease or increase in size. If, for example, a man in Atlantis was, let: us say, stupid or sensual, he fell into matter, as it were, and became a giant in stature. The more intelligent human beings developed a delicate constitution and were smaller in stature; those who were dull-witted were giants. Man's external form was far, far more strongly influenced by the forces of soul than is the case today when substance has become rigid. The bodies of men developed in accordance with the qualities of soul, and this accounted for the great differences in the races.
When myths and legends have described the dwarfs as being clever and the giants as dull-witted, we recognize once again the reflection of a profound, occult trend. When a soul came down again to the earth from Mars, the qualities with which it had been connected there continued for a long time to influence it and the body it inhabited. This fact explains the differences in races and racial characteristics.
If the evolution of humanity until the middle of the Atlantean epoch had proceeded without the influence of Lucifer, man would by then have developed a picture consciousness imbued with a high degree of clairvoyance. There would have been in his soul something that through its power would have revealed the external world to him in inner pictures; he would not have perceived objects outside through his eyes. As a result of the luciferic influence man had perceived the physical world at an early stage, but not rightly. He saw the external world through a veil, as it were. Evolution as provided for him by the divine-spiritual beings was that in place of the dull, clairvoyant consciousness with which his inner world was perceived in pictures, he would have seen the external world but in such a way that behind everything material, spirit would have been present. He would have seen the spirit behind the physical world. All of a sudden—but please do not take that literally, for the process was obviously lengthy—the external world would have appeared to man at a certain time; he would have awakened. The inner world would have suddenly vanished but the consciousness of the spirit whence that world originated would have remained. Man would have seen not only the plants, animals and so forth but simultaneously the spirit whence they had come forth. Because the luciferic beings drew man down to the earth too soon, the external world had the effect of hiding the world of spirit from him; physical matter became opaque for him. Otherwise, he would have seen through it to the primordial spiritual ground of the world. Because man had come down too soon into matter, it proved to be too dense for him and he could not penetrate it. But from the middle of the Atlantean epoch onward, other retarded spiritual beings were able to impregnate this matter, in consequence of which it was as if clouded, made turbid, and man was again no longer able to behold the spiritual. These were the ahrimanic or Mephistophelian beings. Mephistopheles—Ahriman is not the same being as Lucifer. Through untruth Zarathustra calls Ahriman the liar. He beclouds the purity of the spirit of man, conceals the spiritual from him. Ahriman comes after Lucifer and instils into man the illusion that matter is a reality in itself. So in his progress, during which the divine-spiritual beings wanted their influence to work upon him, man allowed himself to be subject to two other influences: those of Lucifer who assails man in his inner nature, in the astral body, endeavoring to confuse and mislead him, and Ahriman, who, working from outside, deludes man to a certain extent, causing the external world to appear to him as maya, as matter, We must speak of Lucifer as the spirit who is active within man. Ahriman, on the contrary, is the spirit who spreads matter like a veil over the spiritual and makes recognition of the spiritual world impossible. These two spirits hold man back in his development to spirituality. It was especially the ahrimanic influence that asserted itself in man and caused the Atlantean part of the earth to perish.
In Lemuria, with their magical forces, men had a strong effect upon nature. They could, for example, control fire. The Atlanteans were no longer capable of this. But with their will they could control the germinal forces in which deep secrets lie hidden—the forces of air and water. Fire was beyond their control. Let us be clear that when we look at a locomotive today, constructed by and controlled by man, this is something quite different. Today man understands how to make the forces contained in coal serve his purposes, to turn them into a propelling power. This process means that he controls the lifeless, mineral force in the coal. The Atlantean, however, controlled the actual life force contained in seeds. Think of the life force that causes the blades of grass to sprout from the earth. This life force was extracted from the seed by the Atlanteans and put to use. In their sheds where the Atlanteans kept their “air ships” they laid up enormous stocks of seeds, just as we today store coal. With the force accumulated from the seeds they propelled their vehicles. When the clairvoyant looks back to that epoch, he sees these vehicles near the earth in the air that was still dense to a certain extent; equipped with a kind of steerage apparatus, they rose up and moved. The Atlanteans controlled these forces. Now it is unthinkable to imagine that the forces of plants—soul forces, that is to say—can be applied by magical means without at the same time influencing the forces of air and water. When the will of the Atlantean turned to evil and used these forces for egotistic purposes, he simultaneously evoked the forces of water and of air, released them, and ancient Atlantis perished as the result. The continents came into existence through the cooperation of the elements and man. But now the ahrimanic influence was gradually able to become so strong that man could no longer see the spiritual. Behind physical matter he could see nothing except the mineral element, the inorganic, and therewith the magical powers vanished ever more completely from him.
In the Atlantean epoch man was able to control and master the life force in the plant kingdom. In the Lemurian epoch it lay within his power to control the seminal forces of animals, and indeed it actually came to the point of Lemurian man applying these seminal forces of animals to transform animal forms into human forms. Every such magical action performed by man with the seminal forces, causes a release of the forces of fire. When such will becomes evil, the worst forces of black magic are generated and evoked. Today the most evil forces on the earth are still released when black magicians mishandle forces that are, generally speaking, withheld from mankind. These forces are powerful and at the same time holy. They are forces that, in the wise hands of worthy guides, can be applied in the highest and purest service of humanity.
Man now gradually became incapable of moulding his body. Cartilage and bones, the hard constituents, were integrated into it and man's resemblance to his present stature constantly increased. It was in the Atlantean epoch that what has been described first took place and it is therefore comprehensible that ancient Atlantis cannot be found by modern researchers. Hopes cherished by learned men of still being able to find traces of human evolution in those olden times, will never be fulfilled, because man was then a being whose limbs still consisted of soft, flabby substance. Such a body cannot be preserved, just as after a hundred years no remnants of the soft-bodied mollusks are to he found. Remnants of animals from ancient periods can still be found because the animals had already hardened while man's constitution was still soft and pliable. The animals came down into matter too soon; they were not able to wait. Out of the earliest human figures who had become physical too soon the most stunted human figures have come into existence. The noblest human figures stayed above the earth the longest, and remained soft and pliable. They waited until they were able to avoid an epoch during which they would have been obliged to remain stationary at a certain stage of hardening, as in the case of the animals. Because they were not able to wait, the animals have remained at a stage of rigidity and hardening.
The evolution of the earth has now been described up to the time when the forces of water were unleashed and ancient Atlantis perished. The human beings who were saved from Atlantis made their way on the one side toward America, on the other, to the Europe, Asia and Africa of today. These great migrations continued for long ages.
We will now think once more of ancient Atlantean culture. In the earliest period man possessed strong magical powers. With these powers he controlled the seed forces, mastered the forces of nature and in a certain way was still able to see into the spiritual world. Clairvoyance then gradually faded. Men were destined to found the culture belonging to the earth; they were to descend to the earth in the real sense. Thus, at the end of Atlantis there were two kinds of human beings within the peoples and races. Firstly, at the height of Atlantean culture there were seers, clairvoyants and powerful magicians who worked by means of magical forces and were able to see into the spiritual world. Beside them were people who were preparing to be the founders of present humanity. They already had within them the rudiments of the faculties possessed by men today. They could emphatically no longer equal the achievements of the old Atlanteans but they were able to make preparation for intelligence, for the power of judgment. They possessed the elementary faculties of calculation, computation, analysis and so forth. They were the people who developed the rudiments of the intelligence of today and no longer made use of the magical forces applied. by the Atlantean magicians at the time when their application was already fraught with danger on account of the powerful ahrimanic influence. They were those “others,” the despised people, rather like the anthroposophists today who meet together in small groups, or like the first Christians in ancient Rome who gathered together in the catacombs.
Now in Atlantis there were also centers of culture and ritual—we will call them the Atlantean Oracles—where what is called the Atlantean wisdom was harbored and practiced. In accordance with the differences in human souls due to their having come down to the earth from different planets, there were necessarily different Oracles for men of different constitutions. There was a Mars Oracle, a Jupiter Oracle, a Venus Oracle, and so on. These Oracles were sanctuaries where the initiates, who were sages of a certain degree, guided and led the Mars race, the Jupiter race, and so on. All these Oracles, however, were in turn led by the still more powerful Sun Oracle. This was the leading center of the Mysteries whence the cultural instructions for the other Oracles proceeded. As well as this highest leadership, all Mars men were under that of the center where the initiate of the Mars Oracle resided, together with his pupils; all Mercury souls were led from the Mercury Oracle, all Jupiter souls from the Jupiter Oracle, and so on. All these Oracle centers, however, were subject to the authority of the great initiate of the Sun Oracle.
This great leader of the Sun Oracle, the greatest initiate of Atlantis, directed his attention above all to that section of human beings who differed from the ordinary population in ancient Atlantis. They were simple people who were looked down upon and who no longer possessed magical powers. But it was they who were gathered together by the great initiate because they had developed the new faculties, even if only in a primitive form. It was from them that understanding of the new age was to be expected. The great initiate gathered together this useful material for the future, and also those old initiates or magicians who had not persisted in clinging egotistically to the former practices. Our present age presents a similar picture and can be compared with the conditions prevailing in Atlantis at that time. Today, too, there are on the one side the influential figures in the prevailing forms of culture, people who in their own way are magicians, working only with what is inorganic; on the other side, there are the despised people who still today want to work for the future. At that time, in Atlantis, the representatives of culture, the old magicians, also looked down with disparagement upon the small number of those who had developed the new faculty, which was useless in ancient Atlantis. The great initiate of the Sun Oracle did not, however, despise these people; today, too, the proud bearers of our culture look down upon a small number of human beings, upon the anthroposophists who gather in small, insignificant meeting places and are said to engage in all kinds of foolish activities. Generally speaking, they are unprofessional laymen who claim to be inaugurating the future. These are the people who are developing and preparing in themselves a faculty that to the others seems useless, but because it has a foreboding of the future is able to create a connection again with the spiritual world. In Atlantis long ago it was a matter of finding the connection with the physical, material world; the task today is to discover the spiritual again. Just as at that time the old initiate gathered his host together locally, directing his call to the simple, despised people, so today again, under different—not local—conditions, a call goes forth from the great Masters of Wisdom who are allowing certain spiritual treasures of wisdom to flow into humanity. Those possessed of certain qualities respond to this call as did certain human beings long ages ago; they were individuals who had within them primitive talents for calculation, computation and so forth.
This wisdom is not imparted in order that theosophical dogmas shall be grasped by the intellect but that they shall be understood by the heart. A man is then strong enough to know why theosophy is there today. It is there to meet a great challenge of evolution, and he who knows this also finds the strength to conquer all obstacles, come what may. He proceeds along his path because he knows that what is intended to come to pass through theosophy must come to pass for the further progress of humanity on the path to the spirit.
The great initiate of the Sun Oracle led the small group of human beings and founded a kind of cultural center in Asia. He drew these individuals to him in order to make them capable of founding post-Atlantean culture. During the great migration, everything that had come into existence in Atlantis had been mingled, jumbled together. It follows that in the post-Atlantean epoch one should no longer speak of races but of civilizations, cultures.
We will now turn to consider the consecutive civilizations in the post-Atlantean epoch, the first of which is the ancient Indian. A remarkable mixture of peoples had been saved after the Atlantean catastrophe and had congregated in primeval India. The human beings who lived there still had the deepest, overwhelming yearning for the spiritual world, knowing that from it they had been born and that now they had lost it. Thither the great initiate of the Sun Oracle sent the seven Holy Rishis. With longing fraught with pain, the man of ancient India maintained that the world of the senses is untrue and that the spiritual world from which he has descended is the only true world. It was, therefore, easy for the Holy Rishis to teach what they had to say about the primeval wisdom, about the Mysteries, to those who still harbored a longing for the spiritual world. To the ancient Indians the material world was maya, the great illusion.
Already a different attitude of soul prevailed in the second post-Atlantean epoch of culture, the ancient Persian epoch. Western thinking and research in the physical world realize that this wonderful world, constructed as it is according to laws of perfect harmony is worthy to be penetrated by the spirit. The people of Zarathustra had a boding realization of this. Those who have knowledge of the people of ancient Persia will be able to distinguish clearly between them and the people of India. To the latter, everything around them was maya, illusion; the spiritual world alone was real and a worthy goal of aspiration; that world alone was permeated by the highest self. Such an attitude of soul could not master the physical world. This became possible for the first time with the culture inaugurated by Zarathustra, the great pupil of the mighty initiate of the Sun Oracle. He knew and taught that the world outside is not maya but the expression of divine-spiritual reality, that behind it lies what Ahriman had hidden from man. What thus lies behind the world of sense must be disclosed and Zarathustra's aim was to find the spirit in the material world. That was his mission. In Ormuzd and Ahriman light and darkness are pitted against each other.
In the third epoch, the Egyptian-Chaldean-Assyrian-Babylonian, man had already formed a close link with the physical world. Lifting his eyes to the stellar script in the heavens, the deeds and the wisdom of the gods were revealed to him and he tried to understand and fathom them. The wonderful stellar wisdom of the Chaldean priesthood is a memorial of these strivings.
The fourth culture, that of Greece and Rome, leads man right down to the physical plane. He has now come to love it so dearly that he has quite forgotten his origin. He no longer understands the spiritual world. This is clearly indicated in the saying of the Greek hero, Achilles: “Better to be a beggar in the upper world than a king in the realm of the Shades.” The wonderful sculpture of Greece and the citizenship of Rome are the hallmarks of this fourth epoch of culture. The fifth cultural epoch is our own. Materialism and the department store give it a certain characteristic stamp.
The purpose of all these cultures is, after all, that the physical plane shall be gradually mastered by man. Two fundamental streams come to expression in the cultures that have existed until today. The views and trends of feeling of the Eastern and Western worlds confront each other at the present time. The Eastern world calls the physical plane maya or illusion and does not want to be entangled with it either in thoughts, acts or feelings. The basic aim of the Western conception of the world, however, is to penetrate into this material world, come to grips with it. Outwardly, therefore, things may come to a confrontation but each world has its own complete justification. Let the Western world concern itself with external culture and by this means develop the forces of the soul, and let the Eastern take its path. At the summit they come together.
Thus we think of the Indian who leads an inner, spiritual life, withdrawn from the outer, material world, and the Persian who still sees something inimical in matter but nevertheless infuses spirit into it. The Egyptian contemplates the spirit and its laws; the Chaldean sees in the movements of the stars the script of the gods in space and reveres the stellar wisdom as the expression. of divine-spiritual beings. We see the Greek who knew how to imprint in matter itself the ideal of beauty and perfection of what nature has created; the Greek personifies the epoch when we can marvel at the marriage between spirit and matter in the physical masterpieces of art. Reference must be made here to a deep, occult background. Think of the Greek temple in its majestic purity and beauty; it is the actual dwelling place of the god. The essential difference between these works of architecture and sculpture and those of other cultural epochs is that the Greek temple in its pure form is so supreme in the perfection of its lines, even from the architectonic, artistic standpoint, that nothing can equal it. if the soul steeps itself in these lines—in the ruins of the temple at this is still to be seen—if it contemplates a Doric or an Ionian temple and has something of what is called space consciousness, it perceives how these lines are actually integrated in space. You yourselves are aware that certain currents, certain streams, are present in space. The Greek temple follows the inevitable courses of these streams and presents them in physical reality. The Greek creates in space what he has actually found there. The essential secret of the Greek temple is the presence within it of the god himself. Whereas the congregation of the faithful is an integral part of the Gothic cathedral, the Greek temple is a whole in itself. The Gothic cathedral, with its pointed arches and windows, is only conceivable together with its congregation, whose hands, folded in devotion, mirror its forms and together with it constitute a whole. Spirituality was actually present in the Greek temple; it afforded the spiritual being an opportunity to descend and find a dwelling place.
But during this epoch, which has so well understood how to adorn the earth with masterpieces of art, men increasingly lost connection with the spiritual world. The physical world was full of brightness and light for a man but when he passed through death during the epoch of Greco-Latin culture, the spiritual world was barren, cold and dark for him. During the post-Atlantean era, man had conquered the physical world but in the spiritual world sadness and gloom were his lot. Even the initiates, who both here and in yonder world are the teachers of mankind, could bring no consolation. When they told those who were living between death and a new birth about happenings in the physical world, those human souls became even more sorrowful; with every fiber of their beings they clung to the material world that was now taken from them. Here, too, a change took place through the event of Golgotha and the appearance of Christ Jesus on the earth. After His death on the Cross He descended into the Underworld—this is called the journey to Hell—and to those who were no longer living in a physical body He proclaimed that in very truth life had been victorious over death. It was thereby again made possible for souls to rise into the spiritual world.
Die Entwickelungsstadien unserer Erde. Lemurische, atlantische, nachatlantische Epoche
Gestern sind wir in unseren Betrachtungen bis zu dem Zeitalter gekommen, das man das lemurische unserer Erdenentwickelung nennt. In jener Zeit haben wir ein großes kosmisches Ereignis zu verzeichnen: den Austritt des Mondes aus unserer Erdensubstanz. Gerade dadurch kam das richtige Tempo in die Entwickelungsmöglichkeit des Menschen. Damals war unsere Erde weit verschieden in Gestalt und Temperatur von unserer heutigen Erde. Viel höher war die T'emperatur, so daß heutige Menschen auf dieser Erde nicht hätten leben können. Wesentlich anders war auch die Gestalt. Ganz allmählich hat sich die Erde dann so verdichtet, daß sich feste Substanzen auf ihr bildeten. Und wenn wir gestern davon gesprochen haben, daß sich die Leiber verhärteten, so ist das nicht physisch, sondern in bezug auf Stärke und Qualität aufzufassen. Gewisse Stofflichkeiten lösten sich auf. Die ganze Erde war in feurig-flüssigem Zustand und wurde erst allmählich fester und fester. Das ist aber nicht so aufzufassen, als ob sie im heutigen physischen Sinne hart und dick geworden wäre, sondern es hat eben Bezug auf die Stärke und Qualität. Diese Kräfte sind solche, daß sie den Menschen mumifiziert hätten. Aus dem feuerflüssigen Zustand der Erde gliederten sich dann inselartige Gebilde heraus, und die Wesen darauf haben eine entfernte Ähnlichkeit mit unseren heutigen Tieren und Pflanzen. Der Mensch selber aber wohnte während der ersten Hälfte des lemurischen Zeitalters nicht unmittelbar auf der Erde, sondern in der Sphäre über der Erde in einer dünnen, feinen Leiblichkeit; geistigere Menschen waren das. Es hatte der Mensch im Anfang des lemurischen Zeitalters noch nicht die spätere Körperlichkeit und nahm nicht die festere Art Nahrung zu sich. Ja, selbst noch am Ende der Lemuria würden Sie die Formen des Menschenleibes, der schon am dichtesten in der Substanz geworden war, nicht mit den heutigen Knochen behaftet finden. Die Substanz, aus welcher der physische Menschenleib bestand, war noch weich, gallertartig, so daß sie sich äußerlich kaum von der übrigen Substanz unterschied. Diejenigen Seelen, die zu früh auf die Erde heruntergestiegen waren, die nahmen in ihren Leibern diese Art von dichterer Erdensubstanz auf. Es lebten dann die Menschen, die am wenigsten geistig waren, schon auf der Erde, die andern noch über der Erde.
Jetzt erst, während der lemurischen Zeit, entsteht, sozusagen durch das Herausfallen feiner Aschenmassen, feuerflüssiger Metallmassen, der erste Bodensatz von Mineralischem. Diese Massen, sie bilden gleichsam den Anfang von Inseln. Es ist das mehr bildlich ausgedrückt, aber dem hellseherischen Blick stellt sich diese allmähliche Verdichtung so dar. Dann kommt aus dieser Masse heraus das, was wir nennen können ein Pflanzenreich, später bildet sich dann erst das Tierreich. Es würde zu weit führen, wenn ich Ihnen ausführlich erzählen wollte, wie sich allmählich das Physische verdichtet. Es steigt wirklich alles herunter aus höheren Sphären, auch die sich verdichtenden Kontinente. Das aber, was heute der Mensch ist, das hielt sich zunächst noch auf sozusagen in einer Sphäre über der Erde. Darinnen lebten die Menschen und bildeten in dieser weichen Sphäre ihre weichen, feinen Leiber aus. Des Menschen Ätherleib und Astralleib waren da noch nicht mit dem physischen Leibe in so starkem Zusammenhang, noch waren sie mehr frei. Aber mit der Verfestigung des physischen Leibes, der nun immer dichter und dichter wird, wurde auch die Verbindung mit dem Ätherleib und Astralleib eine engere, und der Mensch wurde aus einem schwebenden, schwimmenden Wesen nun ein Wesen, das jetzt die Erde betrat.
In dieser Zeit machte sich beim Menschen ein Einfluß geltend, der sehr wichtig ist. Was wäre ohne diesen Einfluß mit dem Menschen geschehen? Er wäre noch lange, lange ein Wesen geblieben ohne Initiative, ohne innere Selbständigkeit, ein Automat wäre er geblieben, der von höheren geistigen Wesenheiten, von deren Kräften gezogen worden wäre. In den physischen Leib, Ätherleib und Astralleib strömten fortwährend geistige Kräfte von den geistigen Wesenheiten ein. Da waren nun auch solche Wesenheiten darunter, die vorzugsweise in seinem Astralleib wirkten, und die selbst in ihrer Entwickelung zurückgeblieben waren: das sind die luziferischen Wesenheiten. Die zogen den Menschen noch rascher auf den physischen Plan herunter als die guten, in ihrer Entwickelung normalen geistigen Wesenheiten.
Die luziferischen Wesenheiten waren Geister, die eigentlich auf dem Monde ihr Pensum hätten absolvieren sollen. Hätten sie dort ihren Einfluß auf den Menschen geltend gemacht, dann hätten sie nur auf den Astralleib wirken können, denn er war das höchste Glied der menschlichen Wesenheit auf dem Monde. Aber das konnten sie auf dem Monde nicht, weil sie zurückgebliebene Wesenheiten waren. Und auf das Ich konnten sie nicht wirken, da sie das auf dem Monde nicht gelernt hatten. Jetzt waren die luziferischen Wesenheiten so weit, daß sie auf den Astralkörper des Menschen zu wirken vermochten. Aber der Mensch war inzwischen fortgeschritten und hatte sein Ich eingegliedert erhalten. Auf das Ich konnten die luziferischen Wesenheiten noch nicht wirken; auf das Ich wirkten höhere Wesenheiten ein, auch auf den Astralleib, aber nur durch das Ich hindurch. Direkt auf den Astralleib zu wirken, hätten sie sich sozusagen nicht erlaubt, das war eine Aufgabe, die diese höheren Wesenheiten schon während der Mondenentwickelung erfüllt hatten. Hätten nun die luziferischen Wesenheiten keinen Einfluß auf den Menschen bekommen, dann hätten die höheren Wesenheiten allein gewirkt auf den Astralleib durch das Ich und so den Astralleib gereinigt. Statt dessen wirkten nun während der lemurischen Zeit die luziferischen Wesenheiten von allen Seiten auf den Astralleib direkt ein, und dadurch wurde der menschliche Astralleib all den Einflüssen ausgesetzt, die eigentlich schon auf dem Monde hätten zu Ende gewirkt haben sollen. Es wurden dadurch bestimmte Triebe, Begierden und Leidenschaften dem Menschen eingepflanzt, die er nicht erhalten hätte, wenn die höheren Wesenheiten allein auf ihn gewirkt hätten. Die Götter hätten diese Einflüsse einfach nicht hereingelassen. Zweierlei erhielt der Mensch durch den luziferischen Einfluß: Erstens konnte er zu einer gewissen Rage, einem gewissen Enthusiasmus, einer Begeisterung entflammt werden, dieses oder jenes zu tun; aber diese Begeisterung wurde nicht von seinem Ich aus gelenkt, nicht von den höheren Wesen im Menschen beeinflußt. Zweitens erhielt er die Möglichkeit, von den höheren Wesen abzufallen, das Böse zu tun, aber auch die Möglichkeit der Freiheit. So war die Initiative, der Enthusiasmus, die Freiheit das, was der Mensch den luziferischen Wesenheiten verdankte, aber gleichzeitig entstand in ihm die Möglichkeit des Bösen. So schlichen sich die luziferischen Wesenheiten in den Astralleib des Menschen ein und sind im Grunde genommen heute noch darinnen, denn sie sind es, die ihn einerseits frei machen, andererseits zum Übel hinreißen. Dadurch, daß des Menschen Astralleib von den luziferischen Wesenheiten durchsetzt war, wurde der Mensch früher, zu früh aus der Atmosphäre über der Erde auf die Erde heruntergeführt. Daran sind im wesentlichen die luziferischen Wesenheiten schuld. Der Astralleib des Menschen wurde durch sie verschlechtert und dadurch zu bald verdichtet, sonst wäre er noch lange in dieser Atmosphäre geblieben, die man das Paradies in der Bibel nennt. Also die Austreibung aus dem Paradiese geschah durch den Einfluß der Götter. Stellen Sie sich also die Erde vor in ihrem feuerflüssigen Zustande und dann den Menschen, wie er durch die luziferischen Wesenheiten - zu früh - auf die Erde heruntergeführt wird, auf der sich eben Kontinente bilden. Damals hatte nun der Astralleib des Menschen noch einen viel größeren Einfluß auf seine Umgebung, der Mensch hatte größere magische Kräfte als später, es war noch keine so strenge Trennung zwischen Naturgesetz und Menschenwille. Heute könnte in dieser Beziehung ein böser Mensch nichts Besonderes anrichten. Es würde in der Natur heute nichts erfolgen durch ihn. Damals war das anders. Böse Gelüste in der Seele des Menschen hatten eine sichtbare magische Naturwirkung, sie zogen die Kräfte des Feuers über und auf der Erde an, und der Mensch entflammte die Naturkräfte durch seine bösen Gelüste, seinen magischen Willen. Heute blitzt es nicht mehr dadurch; damals aber blitzte das Feuer durch die Luft, wenn die Menschen böse wurden.
Dadurch nun, daß Massen von Menschen böse wurden und der Mensch sich gar zu sehr dem Einfluß der luziferischen Wesenheiten hingab, zum Bösen sich neigte, wurden auf den Kontinenten der Lemuria die Feuerkräfte entflammt, und die Lemuria ging unter durch die wütenden Feuermassen, durch die Schlechtigkeit eines großen Teiles seiner Bewohner. Die Menschen, die gerettet wurden, gingen nach Westen auf einen Kontinent, der zwischen dem heutigen Afrika, Europa und Amerika sich befand, der Atlantis. In langen, langen Zeitepochen setzte sich dort die Menschheitsentwickelung fort. Es vermehrte sich allmählich die Menschheit wieder, und auf diesen Kontinent stiegen die Seelen herunter, die nach dem Jupiter, dem Mars und so weiter in der Zeit der Verödung gegangen waren. Das nahm lange Zeit in Anspruch. Und so bildeten sich in der alten Atlantis die Rassenbegriffe heraus. Man sagt im Okkultismus: In der alten Atlantis waren Menschen, deren Körper Seelen bewohnten, die früher auf dem Mars, Jupiter, Venus und so weiter waren. Marsmenschen, Jupitermenschen und so weiter nannte man sie. Auch die äußerlichen Gestalten der Leiber wurden dadurch voneinander verschieden. In der ganzen ersten Hälfte der Atlantis war der Menschenleib noch von viel weicherer Masse, er gab den Kräften der Seele nach. Diese Seelenkräfte waren wesentlich stärker als heute und bewältigten, formten den physischen Leib. Ein Mensch von der alten Atlantis hätte, sagen wir, eine Eisenbahnschiene mit Leichtigkeit zerbrechen können, nicht weil seine physischen Kräfte sehr stark waren, denn er hatte noch nicht einmal sein Knochensystem ausgebildet, sondern vermöge seiner magisch-psychischen Kräfte. Eine Flintenkugel zum Beispiel wäre an dieser psychischen Kraft abgeprallt. Die Dichtigkeit der fleischlichen Materie bildete sich erst später aus. Wir finden heute noch eine ähnliche Erscheinung bei gewissen Wahnsinnigen, die durch das Freiwerden starker psychischer Kräfte — weil in dem Zustande der physische Leib nicht in der richtigen Verbindung mit den höheren Leibern ist- schwere Gegenstände heben und werfen können.
Weil der physische Leib nun in der Atlantis noch weich war, so konnte er sich leichter den Seelenvorgängen anschmiegen; es konnte die physische Gestalt kleiner oder größer werden. Wenn zum Beispiel der Mensch der Atlantis dumm war oder sinnlich und so weiter, dann fiel er sozusagen in die Materie hinein und wurde ein Riese an Gestalt. Die mehr geistigen Menschen gliederten sich feiner heraus und waren kleiner an Gestalt, die Dummen waren groß. Die äußere Gestalt in ihrer weichen Materie richtete sich viel, viel mehr nach den seelischen Kräften als heute, wo die Materie starr geworden ist. Die Körper also bildeten sich nach den Eigenschaften der Seele, darum waren auch die Rassen so verschieden.
Wenn die Mythen und Sagen die Zwerge als klug, die Riesen als dumm geschildert haben, so sehen wir wieder einen tiefen okkulten Zug sich darin widerspiegeln. Wenn eine solche Seele also vom Mars jetzt wieder auf die Erde herunterkam, so hatten die dortigen Eigenschaften, mit denen sie verwandt war, noch lange Einfluß auf sie und den Körper, den sie bewohnte. Aus dieser Tatsache erklären sich die Rassenverschiedenheiten und Eigentümlichkeiten.
Wäre die Menschheitsentwickelung bis zur Mitte deratlantischen Zeit ohne den Einfluß von Luzifer gegangen, dann hätte der Mensch bis dahin ein in hohem Grade hellscherisches Bilderbewußtsein entwickelt. In seiner Seele wäre etwas gewesen, wasdurchseineKraftihm die Außenwelt in innern Bildern geoffenbart hätte; nicht durch sein Auge hätte er da die äußeren Gegenstände wahrgenommen. Durch den luziferischen Einfluß nun hat der Mensch die physische Welt früher gesehen, aber nicht richtig, sondern wie durch einen Schleier sieht er die Außenwelt. Vorgesehen war von den göttlich-geistigen Wesenheiten für ihn die Entwickelung so, daß er an Stelle der bei dumpfem hellseherischem Bewußtsein im Bilde wahrgenommenen Innenwelt die Außenwelt wahrgenommen hätte, aber so, daß hinter jedem Sinnlichen ein Geistiges sich befindet. Den realen Geist hinter der physischen Welt hätte er gesehen. Mit einem Schlage - bitte, das nicht wörtlich zu nehmen, es hätte immerhin einige Zeit gedauert - wäre, ohne Luzifer, dem Menschen zu einer gewissen Zeit die Außenwelt erschienen; er wäre erwacht. Die Innenwelt wäre plötzlich verschwunden gewesen, aber das Bewußtsein vom Geiste, aus dem sie stammt, wäre geblieben. Der Mensch hätte nicht nur die Pflanzen, Tiere und so weiter gesehen, sondern gleichzeitig auch den Geist, aus dem sie herausgewachsen sind. Weil nun die luziferischen Wesenheiten den Menschen zu früh auf die Erde heruntergezogen haben, ist die Außenwelt dem Menschen so geworden, daß ihm die Welt des Geistes dahinter zugedeckt ist, und er das Physische undurchsichtig sieht, sonst würde er durch sie hindurch den geistigen Urgrund der Welt sehen. Weil der Mensch zu früh in die Materie hinunterkam, wurde diese Materie für ihn zu dicht. Er konnte sie nicht mehr durchdringen. Aber andere, zurückgebliebene geistige Wesenheiten, konnten sich von der Mitte der atlantischen Zeit an in diese Materie mischen, so daß sie wie von Rauch durchzogen wurde, getrübt wurde, und der Mensch das Geistige nicht mehr schauen konnte. Das sind die ahrimanischen oder mephistophelischen Wesenheiten. Mephistopheles-Ahriman ist etwas anderes als Luzifer. Durch eine Unwahrheit - Lügner nennt ihn Zarathustra — trübt er den reinen menschlichen Geist, verbirgt ihm das Geistige. Ahriman folgt dem Luzifer, er bringt dem Menschen die Illusion bei, daß die Materie etwas für sich ist. So hat also der Mensch bei seinem Fortschreiten, während die göttlich-geistigen Wesenheiten mit ihrem Einfluß auf ihn wirken wollten, zwei andere Einflüsse auf sich wirken lassen: Luzifer, der im Innern, im Astralleib den Menschen angreift und zu beirren sucht, und Ahriman, der von außen her dem Menschen etwas weis macht, der ihm die Außenwelt als Maja, als Materie erscheinen läßt. Luzifer müssen wir ansprechen als den Geist, der im Innern tätig ist, Ahriman dagegen ist der Geist, der die Materie wie einen Schleier über das Geistige breitet und das Erkennen der geistigen Welt unmöglich macht. Und diese beiden Geister halten den Menschen in seiner Entwickelung zur Spiritualität zurück. Und namentlich der ahrimanische Einfluß war es, der sich im Menschen geltend machte und bewirkte, daß ein Teil der Erde zugrunde ging: die Atlantis.
In Lemurien wirkten die Menschen mit ihren magischen Kräften sehr stark auf die Natur. Sie konnten zum Beispiel das Feuer beherrschen. Die Atlantier konnten das schon nicht mehr. Aber sie konnten mit ihrem Willen beherrschen die Samenkräfte, in denen tiefe Geheimnisse verborgen liegen, die Luft- und Wasserkräfte; das Feuer war ihnen entzogen. Machen wir uns klar, daß, wenn wir heute eine Lokomotive schen, die der Mensch gebaut hat und nun beherrscht, da etwas ganz anderes vorliegt. Der Mensch versteht heute, die in der Steinkohle verborgenen Kräfte sich dienstbar zu machen, sie in eine fortbewegende Kraft umzuwandeln. Dieser Vorgang bedeutet, daß er die leblose, die mineralische Kraft, die darinnen wohnt, beherrscht; aber der Atlantier beherrschte die Lebenskraft selbst, die im Samen wohnt. Denken Sie sich, daß die Kraft, die als lebendige Kraft den Halm aus der Erde sprießen läßt, vom Atlantier aus dem Samen herausgelockt und nutzbar gemacht werden konnte. Bei ihren Magazinen, wo die Atlantier ihre Fahrzeuge hatten, da hatten sie riesige Samenmengen lagern, so wie wir heute Kohlenlager haben. Und mit der darin aufgespeicherten Kraft bewegten sie ihre Fahrzeuge vorwärts. Wenn der Hellseher zurückblickt bis in jene Zeit, so sieht er diese Fahrzeuge in der Nähe der Erde in der noch festeren Luft, der dichteren Atmosphäre, sich mit einer Art Steuerung versehen erheben und bewegen. Diese lebendigen Kräfte meisterten die Atlantier. Nun ist es aber undenkbar, sich vorzustellen, daß man solche Kräfte, die in den Pflanzen sind, also seelische Kräfte, magisch verwenden kann, ohne gleichzeitig auf die Kräfte von Luft und Wasser zu wirken. Und als nun der Wille der Atlantier böse wurde und diese seelischen Kräfte zu egoistischen Zwecken verwendete, da rief er zugleich auch die Kräfte des Wassers und der Luft auf, entfesselte sie, und dadurch ging die alte Atlantis zugrunde. Die Kontinente sind entstanden durch das Zusammenwirken der Elemente und Menschen. Jetzt aber konnte der ahrimanische Einfluß allmählich so stark werden, daß der Mensch das Geistige nicht mehr sehen konnte. Er konnte hinter der physischen Materie nichts anderes mehr erkennen als das Mineralische, das Unorganische, und damit schwanden dem Menschen immer mehr die magischen Kräfte.
In dem atlantischen Zeitalter konnte der Mensch die Lebenskraft beherrschen. In der lemurischen Zeit gehörte es zu den Kräften des Menschen, die tierischen Samenkräfte zu beherrschen, und es kam sogar dazu, daß der Mensch, der Lemurier, diese tierischen Samenkräfte dazu verwandte, tierische Formen in menschliche umzuwandeln. Mit jeder solchen magischen Wirkung des Menschen auf die Samenkräfte ist verbunden eine Einwirkung, eine Entfesselung der Feuerkräfte. Wenn nun solcher Wille böse wird, dann werden die schlimmsten Kräfte der schwarzen Magie entfaltet und aufgerufen. Und heute noch werden die schlimmsten Kräfte auf der Erde dadurch entfesselt, daß schwarze Magier Unfug treiben mit solchen Kräften, die im allgemeinen der Menschheit entzogen sind. Kräfte sind das, gewaltige und heilige, die in den weisen Händen würdiger Lenker zum höchsten und reinsten Dienste der Menschheit verwendet werden können.
Der Mensch verliert jetzt allmählich die Fähigkeit, seinen Leib zu formen. Knorpel und Knochen, die harten Teile gliedern sich ein, und immer ähnlicher wurde der Mensch seiner heutigen Gestalt. Das vorher Geschilderte geschah erst in der atlantischen Zeit. Es ist daher begreiflich, daß für den Forscher der alte Atlantier nicht zu finden ist. Auch die Hoffnung der Gelehrten, Spuren solcher alten Zeiten menschlicher Entwickelung doch noch zu finden, wird sich nie erfüllen, denn der Mensch war damals ein Wesen, dessen Teile stofflich noch weich waren. Solch ein Körper kann sich nicht erhalten, ebensowenig wie von den heutigen Weichtieren nach hundert Jahren noch etwas zu finden sein wird. Tierüberreste sind noch aus solchen alten Perioden zu finden, denn die Tiere waren ja schon verhärtet, als der Mensch noch weich war. Die Tiere sind zu früh in die Materie gestiegen, sie haben nicht warten können. Aus den frühesten Menschengestalten, die zu früh physisch geworden sind, sind die verkümmertsten Menschenbildungen entstanden. Die edelsten sind am längsten oben geblieben, weich geblieben; sie haben gewartet, bis sie nicht mehr in eine Zeit gefallen sind, wo sie auf einer Verhärtungsstufe hätten stehenbleiben müssen, wie dies bei den Tieren der Fall war. Die Tiere sind auf einer versteiften, verhärteten Stufe stehengeblieben, weil sie nicht haben warten können.
Wir haben die Erdenentwickelung beschrieben bis dahin, wo die Kräfte des Wassers entfesselt wurden und die alte Atlantis zugrunde ging. Die Menschen, die sich von der Atlantis retteten, zogen einerseits nach Amerika, andererseits nach dem heutigen Europa, Asien und Afrika. Diese Wanderungen, große Wanderzüge, fanden statt, nahmen lange Zeiträume in Anspruch.
Nun wollen wir uns noch einmal anschauen die alte atlantische Kultur. In der ältesten atlantischen Zeit hatte der Mensch starke magische Kräfte. Mit denen beherrschte er die Samenkräfte, beherrschte die Naturkräfte und konnte in einer gewissen Weise noch hineinschauen in die geistige Welt. Allmählich war dann das Hellsehen eingeschlummert, denn die Menschen sollten ja die Erdenkultur begründen; sie sollten wirklich auf die Erde heruntersteigen. So gab es am Ende der Atlantis zweierlei Arten von Menschen innerhalb all der Völker und Rassen: erstens Hellseher, große Magier, die auf der Höhe der atlantischen Kultur standen, und die durch magische Kräfte wirken und hineinschauen konnten in die geistige Welt. Daneben gab es solche, die sich vorbereiteten, die heutige Menschheit zu begründen. Sie hatten schon die Anlagen zu den Fähigkeiten des heutigen Menschen. Sie konnten gar nichts mehr bewirken im Sinne des alten Atlantiers, aber sie bereiteten die Intelligenz, die Urteilskraft vor. Sie besaßen die Anfänge des Rechnens, des Zählens, des Kombinierens und so weiter. Sie waren diejenigen, welche die heutige Intelligenz entwickelten, aber die magischen Kräfte, welche die alten atlantischen Magier verwendeten in der Zeit, wo ihre Anwendung schon gefährlich war wegen des großen ahrimanischen Einflusses, nicht mehr gebrauchten. Sie waren die «Anderen», die Verachteten, etwa wie die heutigen Theosophen, die sich in kleinen Konventikeln vereinen, oder wie die ersten Christen im alten Rom, die in Katakomben zusammenkamen.
Nun gab es in der Atlantis auch mächtige leitende Kultur- und Kultusstätten — wir wollen sie die atlantischen Orakel nennen -, in denen gepflegt wurde, was man die atlantische Weisheit nennt. Nach den Seelen der Menschen, die ja verschieden waren, da sie von den verschiedenen Himmelskörpern heruntergestiegen sind, mußte es auch verschiedene Orakelstätten geben für die andersgearteten Menschen. Es gab ein Marsorakel, ein Jupiterorakel, ein Venusorakel und so weiter. Solche Orakel gab es. Sie waren führende Kultstätten, in denen die Eingeweihten, die Weisen bis zu einer gewissen Höhe, die Marsrasse, die Jupiterrasse und so weiter lenkten und leiteten. Alle diese Orakel wurden aber wieder geleitet von einem mächtigeren Orakel, dem Sonnenorakel. Das war die leitende Mysterienstätte, von der die Kultur für die andern ausging. Daneben wurden alle Marsmenschen geleitet von der Stätte, wo der Eingeweihte des Marsorakels mit seinen Schülern lebte; alle Merkurseelen vom Merkurorakel aus, alle Jupiterseelen vom Jupiterorakel aus und so weiter. Alle diese Orakelstätten aber unterstanden dem großen Eingeweihten des Sonnenorakels.
Dieser große Führer des Sonnenorakels nun, der größte Eingeweihte der Atlantis, er lenkte seine Aufmerksamkeit überall auf jene Schichten von Menschen, die sich von der landläufigen Bevölkerung in der alten Atlantis unterschieden. Das waren schlichte Leute, die gar keine magischen Kräfte mehr besaßen; sie sammelte der große Eingeweihte, jene Verachteten, welche die neuen Fähigkeiten, wenn auch nur primitiv, in sich entwickelt hatten, von denen Verständnis für die neue Zeit zu erwarten war. Das gute Material für die Zukunft nahm er, dazu auch diejenigen alten Eingeweihten oder Magier, die nicht egoistisch an den alten Formen hängen blieben. Wir können unsere heutige Zeit, die ein ähnliches Bild bietet wie jene dazumal in der Atlantis, mit der damaligen Zeit vergleichen. Auch heute gibt es einerseits die Tonangebenden in der herrschenden ausgebreiteten Kultur, die in ihrer Art Magier sind, die nur mit dem Unorganischen arbeiten, andererseits gibt es die Verachteten, die für die Zukunft arbeiten wollen, auch heute. Damals, auf der Atlantis, schauten die ‚Angehörigen ihrer Kultur, die alten Magier, auch mit Verachtung auf die kleine Zahl derer herab, welche die neue Fähigkeit in sich entwickelt hatten, eine Fähigkeit, die ja auf der alten Atlantis zu nichts zu gebrauchen war. Nur der große Eingeweihte des Sonnenorakels verachtete sie nicht. Und so schauen heute die großen Träger unserer Kultur auf ein kleines Häuflein von Menschen herab, auf die Theosophen, die da in kleinen Konventikeln zusammenkommen und allerlei verrücktes Zeug treiben, die im allgemeinen Laien sind und die Zukunft heraufführen sollen. Sie sind es, sind die Leute, die heute eine Fähigkeit in sich entwickeln und vorbereiten, die den andern nutzlos erscheint, die aber geeignet ist, aus der Ahnung der Zukunft heraus wieder einen Zusammenhang mit der geistigen, der spirituellen Welt zu schaffen. Damals auf der Atlantis galt es, den Zusammenhang mit der physischen Welt, dem Sinnlichen zu finden, heute ist die Aufgabe, daß das Geistige, das Spirituelle wiedergefunden werde. Und so wie damals der alte Eingeweihte örtlich seine Schar sammelte, seinen Ruf ergehen ließ an die Verachteten, die Schlichten, so ergeht heute wiederum, unter andern Bedingungen, nicht lokal, ein Ruf von den großen Meistern der Weisheit, die ein gewisses spirituelles Gut von Weisheit hineinfließen lassen in die Menschheit. Und diejenigen folgen diesem Ruf, die in einer gewissen Weise dazu veranlagt sind, wie es damals jene waren, welche die primitiven Eigenschaften des Rechnens, des Zählens und so weiter in sich veranlagt hatten. Nicht bloß, um mit dem Verstande theosophische Dogmen zu begreifen, werden diese Lehren erteilt, sondern um mit dem Herzen sie zu erfassen. Dadurch erhält man dann die Kraft, zu wissen, warum Theosophie heute da ist. Sie ist da, um einer großen Forderung der Menschheitsentwickelung zu entsprechen. Und wer das weiß, der findet auch die Kraft, die Widerstände zu besiegen, was auch kommen möge; er geht seine Bahn, weil er weiß, daß das geschehen muß, was geschehen soll durch die ’Theosophie zur Weiterentwickelung der Menschheit auf dem spirituellen Pfade.
Der große Eingeweihte des Sonnenorakels führte das kleine Häuflein und bildete in Asien eine Art Kulturzentrum. Er zog sich diese Menschen in einer gewissen Beziehung so heran, daß sie die nachatlantische Kultur begründen konnten. Bei den großen Wanderzügen war alles das, was auf der Atlantis entstanden war, zusammengewürfelt worden, durcheinandergemischt. Man sollte daher in der nachatlantischen Zeit nicht mehr von Rassen sprechen, sondern von Kulturen.
Nun wollen wir die in der nachatlantischen Zeit aufeinanderfolgenden Kulturen betrachten. Die erste Kultur ist die uralt indische. Ein merkwürdiges Völkergemisch hatte sich nach der atlantischen Katastrophe da herübergerettet und zusammengefunden im uralten Indien. Die Menschen, die dort lebten, sie hatten noch die tiefste, die eminenteste Sehnsucht nach der geistigen Welt, von der sie wußten, daß sie aus ihr herausgeboren sind und daß sie nun sie verloren haben. Dorthin sendet der große Eingeweihte des Sonnenorakels die sieben heiligen Rishis. Lebendig empfand der Inder mit schmerzlicher Sehnsucht: unwahr ist die Sinneswelt, wahr allein ist die Welt, aus der wir heruntergestiegen sind, die geistige Welt. Leicht ward es daher den heiligen Rishis, das, was sie zu sagen hatten von der Urweltweisheit, von den Mysterien, denen zu lehren, die die Sehnsucht nach der geistigen Welt noch in sich hatten. Maja oder Illusion, die große Täuschung, war den alten Indern die sinnliche Welt.
Schon ein anderer Geist war es, der da waltete in der zweiten nachatlantischen Kultur, in der uralt persischen. Westliches Denken und westliche Forschung im Physischen lernt erkennen, daß dieses Physische, diese wundervoll nach so harmonischen Gesetzen aufgebaute Welt es wert ist, sie mit dem Geiste zu durchdringen. Solch ein Volk, dem dafür eine Ahnung aufging, war das Volk des Zarathustra. Wer dieses uralt persische Volk kennt, der wird genau unterscheiden können zwischen diesem Volke und dem Volke der Inder. Maja, Illusion war diesen alles, was sie umgab; wahr und erstrebenswert war ihnen nur die geistige Welt, nur sie durchdrungen von dem höchsten Selbst. Erobern konnte man mit solcher Gesinnung nicht die physische Welt. Das war erst möglich mit der Kultur des Zarathustra, dem großen Schüler des großen Eingeweihten des Sonnenorakels. Er wußte und lehrte, daß das Äußere nicht Maja, sondern der Ausdruck eines Göttlich-Geistigen ist, daß dahinter dasjenige ruht, was Ahriman dem Menschen verdeckt hatte. Dieses, was da hinter der Sinneswelt liegt, das sollte enthüllt werden. Dahin wirkt der Zarathustra: im Sinnlichen den Geist zu finden. Das ist seine Mission. In Ormuzd und ‚Ahriman stehen sich Licht und Finsternis gegenüber.
In der dritten Epoche, der ägyptisch-chaldäisch-assyrisch-babylonischen, da hat der Mensch schon mehr den Anschluß an die physische Welt gefunden. In der gewaltigen Sternenschrift des Firmaments, da sieht er die Taten, die Weisheit der Götter eingegraben, und er lenkt den Blick hinauf und sucht sie zu verstehen, zu ergründen. Die wunderbare Sternenweisheit der chaldäischen Priesterweisen ist ein Denkmal dafür.
Die vierte Kultur, die griechisch-römische, sie führt den Menschen vollends herab auf den physischen Plan. So lieb hat er ihn jetzt gewonnen, daß er ganz vergessen hat, woher er gekommen ist. Das Verständnis für die geistige Welt ist ihm verlorengegangen. Tief zeigt dieses der Ausspruch des griechischen Helden Achilles: Lieber ein Bettler in der Oberwelt als ein König im Reiche der Schatten. - Die wundervolle Plastik der Griechen und der römische Bürger sind die charakteristischen Merkmale dieser Kultur. Die fünfte Kultur ist die unsrige. Der Materialismus und das Warenhaus drücken ihr einen gewissen Stempel auf.
Der Sinn all dieser Kulturen ist ja der, daß immer mehr und mehr vom Menschen der physische Plan erobert wird, und zwei Strömungen, zwei Grundstimmungen kommen da zum Ausdruck in den Kulturen, die sich bis heute erhalten haben. Es stehen sich heute gegenüber die östliche und die westliche Welt, ihre Anschauungen und Gefühlsströmungen. Maja oder Illusion nennt die östliche Welt den physischen Plan, und sie will sich nicht mit ihm verquicken in ihrem Denken, in ihrem Handeln und ihrem Gefühlsleben. Hineinarbeiten in diese Sinnenwelt, Hand an sie anlegen, das ist der Grundsatz der westlichen Weltanschauung. Äußerlich mag es daher zu einer Kollision kommen, jede aber hat ihre volle Berechtigung. Möge die westliche in die äußere Kultur hineinarbeiten und so die Kräfte der Seele entfalten, und möge die östliche ihren Weg gehen: der Gipfel führt sie beide zusammen.
So haben wir den Inder, der ein Leben geistig in sich führt, abgewandt von der äußeren sinnlichen Welt, und den Perser, der etwas Feindliches in der Materie noch sieht, aber schon in sie den Geist hineinarbeitet. Wir haben den Ägypter, der ihre Gesetze studiert, den Chaldäer, der in dem Gang der Sterne die Handschrift des Gottes im Raume sieht, der die Sternenweisheit als Ausdruck der göttlich-geistigen Wesenheiten verehrt. Vor uns steht der Grieche, der das Ideal der Schönheit und Vollkommenheit dessen, was die Natur geschaffen hat, dem Stoffe selbst einzuprägen verstanden hat; mit ihm die Zeit, wo wir die Ehe zwischen dem Geiste und der Materie in den physischen Wunderwerken der Kunst bestaunen können. Ein tiefer okkulter Hintergrund ist hier zu erwähnen. Betrachten Sie den griechischen Tempel in seiner herrlichen Reinheit und Schöne: der Gott wohnt wirklich darinnen. Der wesentliche Unterschied zwischen diesen Werken der Architektonik und Plastik und denen anderer Kulturepochen ist der, daß der griechische Tempel in seiner reinen Form schon vom rein architektonischen, künstlerischen Standpunkte aus so hoch in der Vollkommenheit der Linien steht, daß nichts ihn erreichen kann. Vertieft sich die Seele darein - in den Ruinen des Tempels von Paestum können Sie das noch wahrnehmen -, betrachtet sie einen dorischen Tempel, einen ionischen, und hat sie etwas von dem in sich, was man Raumbewußtsein nennt, so spürt sie, wie diese Linien förmlich in den Raum hineingegossen sind. Sie wissen, daß gewisse Strömungen im Raum vorhanden sind. Die Notwendigkeit dieser Strömungen benutzend, sie physisch darstellend, erbildet sich der griechische Tempel. Das, was er schon im Raume findet, das schafft der Grieche im Raum. Beim griechischen Tempel ist die Hauptsache, daß der Gott selbst darinnen ist; zum gotischen Dom gehört die gläubige Gemeinde. Der griechische Tempel ist ein Ganzes an sich, der gotische Dom mit seinen Spitzbogenfenstern ist nur denkbar mit der Gemeinde, deren andächtig gefaltete Hände seine Formen widerspiegeln und mit ihm zusammen ein Ganzes bilden. In dem griechischen Tempel war wirklich die Geistigkeit darinnen, er gab den Geistwesen eine Gelegenheit, daß sie heruntersteigen und darin Wohnung nehmen konnten.
Aber in dieser Zeit, die es so sehr verstanden hat, die Erde mit solchen Wunderwerken zu schmücken, da verloren die Menschen immer mehr den Zusammenhang mit der geistigen Welt. Licht und hell war es in der physischen Welt für den Menschen, aber wenn er durch den Tod ging, dann war es in der geistigen Welt für ihn zur Zeit der griechisch-lateinischen Kultur öde und kalt und finster. Erobert hatte sich der Mensch die physische Welt in der nachatlantischen Zeit, aber in der geistigen Welt war es für ihn traurig und trübe, und auch die Eingeweihten, die ja hier wie dort Lehrer der Menschheit sind, sie konnten keinen Trost bringen. Denn wenn sie denen, die in dem Leben zwischen dem Tode und einer neuen Geburt waren, von dem erzählten, was in der physischen Welt geschah, so wurden sie ja, jene Menschenseelen, nur noch unglücklicher, denn sie hingen ja mit allen Fasern ihrer Seele an dieser sinnlichen Welt, die ihnen nun genommen war. Eine Änderung ist auch hier eingetreten durch das Ereignis von Golgatha und die Erscheinung des Christus Jesus auf der Erde. Er stieg nach seinem Tode am Kreuze in die Unterwelt hinab - man nennt das die Höllenfahrt - und er verkündete auch denen, die nicht mehr im physischen Leibe lebten, daß das Leben wirklich den Tod besiegt hat. Dadurch war den Seelen wieder die Möglichkeit des Aufstiegs in der geistigen Welt gegeben.
The Stages of our Earth's Development. The Lemurian, Atlantean, and post-Atlantean Epochs
Yesterday, we came to the age known as the Lemurian epoch in the development of our Earth. At that time, a great cosmic event took place: the moon separated from the substance of our Earth. It was precisely this event that set the right pace for human development. At that time, our Earth was very different in shape and temperature from our Earth today. The temperature was much higher, so that human beings as we know them today could not have lived on this Earth. Its shape was also very different. Gradually, the Earth became denser, so that solid substances formed on its surface. And when we spoke yesterday of bodies becoming harder, this was not to be understood in a physical sense, but in terms of strength and quality. Certain substances dissolved. The whole Earth was in a fiery, liquid state and only gradually became more and more solid. However, this should not be understood as meaning that it became hard and thick in the physical sense of today, but rather in relation to strength and quality. These forces are such that they would have mummified human beings. From the fiery-liquid state of the earth, island-like formations then emerged, and the beings on them bore a distant resemblance to our present-day animals and plants. However, during the first half of the Lemurian epoch, human beings did not live directly on the earth, but in the sphere above the earth in a thin, fine physical body; they were more spiritual human beings. At the beginning of the Lemurian epoch, humans did not yet have their later physicality and did not consume food in its more solid form. Even at the end of Lemuria, you would not have found the forms of the human body, which had already become denser in substance, to be similar to today's bones. The substance of which the physical human body was composed was still soft and gelatinous, so that it differed little from the rest of the substance. Those souls who had descended to Earth too early took on this denser earthly substance in their bodies. The least spiritual people then lived on Earth, while the others still lived above the Earth.
Only now, during the Lemurian period, does the first mineral sediment arise, so to speak, through the falling out of fine ash masses, fiery liquid metal masses. These masses form, as it were, the beginnings of islands. This is expressed more figuratively, but to the clairvoyant eye, this gradual condensation appears in this way. Then, out of this mass emerges what we can call the plant kingdom, and later the animal kingdom forms. It would take too long to tell you in detail how the physical gradually condenses. Everything really descends from higher spheres, even the condensing continents. But what we now call the human being initially remained, so to speak, in a sphere above the earth. Human beings lived there and formed their soft, delicate bodies in this soft sphere. The etheric and astral bodies were not yet so strongly connected to the physical body; they were still more free. But with the solidification of the physical body, which is now becoming denser and denser, the connection with the etheric body and astral body also became closer, and human beings, who had been floating, floating beings, now became beings who entered the earth.
During this time, a very important influence came into play in human beings. What would have happened to human beings without this influence? They would have remained beings without initiative, without inner independence, for a long, long time. They would have remained automatons, drawn by higher spiritual beings and their forces. Spiritual forces from spiritual beings flowed continuously into the physical body, etheric body, and astral body. Among these beings there were also those who preferred to work in the astral body and who themselves were backward in their development: these are the Luciferic beings. They pulled human beings down to the physical plane even more quickly than the good spiritual beings who were normal in their development.
The Luciferic beings were spirits who should actually have completed their work on the Moon. Had they exerted their influence on human beings there, they could only have acted on the astral body, for that was the highest member of the human being on the Moon. But they could not do that on the Moon because they were retarded beings. And they could not act on the I, for they had not learned how to do that on the Moon. Now the Luciferic beings had progressed to the point where they were able to influence the astral body of human beings. But human beings had advanced in the meantime and had integrated their ego. The Luciferic beings could not yet influence the ego; higher beings influenced the ego, and also the astral body, but only through the ego. They did not allow themselves to work directly on the astral body, so to speak; that was a task that these higher beings had already fulfilled during the lunar evolution. If the Luciferic beings had not gained influence over human beings, the higher beings would have worked alone on the astral body through the ego, thereby purifying the astral body. Instead, during the Lemurian period, the Luciferic beings acted directly on the astral body from all sides, and as a result, the human astral body was exposed to all the influences that should have already come to an end on the moon. This implanted certain instincts, desires, and passions in human beings that they would not have received if the higher beings had acted on them alone. The gods would simply not have allowed these influences to enter. Human beings received two things through the Luciferic influence: First, they could be inflamed with a certain rage, a certain enthusiasm, an excitement to do this or that; but this enthusiasm was not directed by their ego, nor was it influenced by the higher beings within them. Second, they received the possibility of falling away from the higher beings, of doing evil, but also the possibility of freedom. Thus, initiative, enthusiasm, and freedom were what humans owed to the Luciferic beings, but at the same time, the possibility of evil arose within them. In this way, the Luciferic beings crept into the astral body of humans and are basically still there today, for it is they who, on the one hand, make humans free and, on the other hand, lead them to evil. Because the human astral body was permeated by the Luciferic beings, humans were brought down from the atmosphere above the Earth too early. The Luciferic beings are essentially to blame for this. They corrupted the human astral body, causing it to become densified too soon; otherwise it would have remained for a long time in the atmosphere that is called paradise in the Bible. So the expulsion from paradise happened through the influence of the gods. Imagine the Earth in its fiery state and then humans being brought down too early by the Luciferic beings to the Earth, where continents were just forming. At that time, the astral body of man still had a much greater influence on his environment; man had greater magical powers than later; there was not yet such a strict separation between natural law and human will. Today, an evil person could not do anything special in this regard. Nothing would happen in nature today as a result of his actions. At that time, it was different. Evil desires in the soul of man had a visible magical effect on nature; they attracted the forces of fire to and upon the earth, and man inflamed the forces of nature through his evil desires, his magical will. Today, there are no longer flashes of lightning as a result of this; but at that time, fire flashed through the air when people became evil.
Now, because masses of people became evil and man gave himself over too much to the influence of Luciferic beings, tending toward evil, the forces of fire were inflamed on the continents of Lemuria, and Lemuria was destroyed by the raging masses of fire, by the wickedness of a large part of its inhabitants. Those who were saved went west to a continent that was located between present-day Africa, Europe, and America, called Atlantis. Human development continued there for long, long periods of time. Gradually, humanity multiplied again, and the souls that had gone to Jupiter, Mars, and so on during the period of desolation descended to this continent. This took a long time. And so the racial concepts developed in ancient Atlantis. In occultism, it is said that in ancient Atlantis there were people whose bodies were inhabited by souls that had previously been on Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and so on. They were called Martians, Jupiterians, and so on. The external forms of their bodies also differed from one another as a result. Throughout the first half of Atlantis, the human body was still made of a much softer mass; it yielded to the forces of the soul. These soul forces were much stronger than today and controlled and shaped the physical body. A person from ancient Atlantis could have broken a railroad track with ease, not because their physical strength was very great, for they had not even developed their skeletal system, but because of their magical psychic powers. A shotgun pellet, for example, would have bounced off this psychic force. The density of the physical matter only developed later. We still find a similar phenomenon today in certain lunatics who, through the release of strong psychic forces — because in this state the physical body is not in the right connection with the higher bodies — can lift and throw heavy objects.
Because the physical body was still soft in Atlantis, it could more easily adapt to the soul processes; the physical form could become smaller or larger. For example, if the people of Atlantis were stupid or sensual, etc., they fell, so to speak, into matter and became giants in stature. The more spiritual people were more finely structured and smaller in stature, while the stupid ones were large. The outer form in its soft matter was much, much more attuned to the soul forces than it is today, where matter has become rigid. The bodies were therefore formed according to the characteristics of the soul, which is why the races were so different.
When myths and legends describe dwarfs as clever and giants as stupid, we see a deep occult trait reflected in this. When such a soul came down to Earth from Mars, the qualities it was related to there continued to influence it and the body it inhabited for a long time. This fact explains the differences and peculiarities between the races.
If human evolution had continued until the middle of the Atlantic epoch without the influence of Lucifer, humans would have developed a highly lucid image consciousness by that time. There would have been something in his soul that would have revealed the outer world to him in inner images through its power; he would not have perceived external objects through his eyes. Through the influence of Lucifer, however, man saw the physical world earlier, but not correctly; he sees the outer world as if through a veil. The divine spiritual beings had intended for him to develop in such a way that, instead of perceiving the inner world in images through a dull clairvoyant consciousness, he would have perceived the outer world, but in such a way that behind every sense perception there is a spiritual reality. He would have seen the real spirit behind the physical world. With one blow—please do not take this literally, it would have taken some time—without Lucifer, the outer world would have appeared to man at a certain time; he would have awakened. The inner world would have suddenly disappeared, but the consciousness of the spirit from which it originated would have remained. Man would have seen not only plants, animals, and so on, but at the same time also the spirit from which they grew. Because the Luciferic beings pulled man down to earth too early, the outer world has become such that the world of the spirit behind it is hidden from man, and he sees the physical as opaque; otherwise he would see through it to the spiritual foundation of the world. Because humans descended into matter too early, this matter became too dense for them. They could no longer penetrate it. But other spiritual beings that had remained behind were able to mix themselves into this matter from the middle of the Atlantean period onwards, so that it became clouded, as if filled with smoke, and humans could no longer see the spiritual. These are the Ahrimanic or Mephistophelean beings. Mephistopheles-Ahriman is something different from Lucifer. Through a falsehood—Zarathustra calls him a liar—he clouds the pure human spirit and hides the spiritual from it. Ahriman follows Lucifer; he teaches human beings the illusion that matter is something in itself. Thus, in his progress, while the divine-spiritual beings sought to influence him, man allowed two other influences to act upon him: Lucifer, who attacks man from within, in the astral body, and seeks to mislead him, and Ahriman, who works from outside, making man believe something, presenting the outer world to him as Maya, as matter. We must address Lucifer as the spirit that is active within, while Ahriman is the spirit that spreads matter like a veil over the spiritual and makes it impossible to recognize the spiritual world. And these two spirits hold human beings back in their development toward spirituality. It was the Ahrimanic influence in particular that asserted itself in human beings and caused part of the earth to perish: Atlantis.
In Lemuria, humans exerted a very strong influence on nature with their magical powers. For example, they could control fire. The Atlanteans were no longer able to do this. But they could control with their will the seed forces, in which deep secrets are hidden, the forces of air and water; fire had been taken from them. Let us realize that when we look at a locomotive today, which man has built and now controls, something completely different is at work. Man today understands how to harness the forces hidden in coal and transform them into a propulsive force. This process means that he controls the lifeless, mineral force that dwells within it; but the Atlanteans controlled the life force itself that dwells in the seed. Imagine that the force that, as a living force, causes the stalk to sprout from the earth could be drawn out of the seed by the Atlanteans and made usable. In their magazines, where the Atlanteans kept their vehicles, they stored huge quantities of seeds, just as we have coal stores today. And with the power stored in them, they moved their vehicles forward. When the clairvoyant looks back to that time, he sees these vehicles near the earth in the even denser air, the denser atmosphere, rising and moving with a kind of steering mechanism. The Atlanteans mastered these living forces. However, it is now inconceivable to imagine that such forces, which are in plants, i.e., spiritual forces, can be used magically without simultaneously affecting the forces of air and water. And when the will of the Atlanteans became evil and they used these soul forces for selfish purposes, they simultaneously called upon the forces of water and air, unleashed them, and thus the ancient Atlantis was destroyed. The continents were created through the interaction of the elements and human beings. Now, however, the Ahrimanic influence gradually became so strong that human beings could no longer see the spiritual. They could no longer recognize anything behind physical matter other than the mineral, the inorganic, and thus the magical powers of human beings gradually disappeared.
In the Atlantean age, human beings were able to control the life force. In the Lemurian era, it was one of the powers of human beings to control the animal seed forces, and it even came to pass that human beings, the Lemurians, used these animal seed forces to transform animal forms into human ones. Every such magical effect of human beings on the seed forces is connected with an influence, a unleashing of the fire forces. When such will becomes evil, the worst forces of black magic are unleashed and invoked. And even today, the worst forces on earth are unleashed by black magicians who misuse such powers, which are generally withheld from humanity. These are powerful and sacred forces that can be used in the wise hands of worthy leaders for the highest and purest service to humanity.
Man is now gradually losing the ability to shape his body. Cartilage and bones, the hard parts, are becoming integrated, and man is becoming more and more similar to his present form. What has been described above only happened in the Atlantean era. It is therefore understandable that the ancient Atlanteans cannot be found by researchers. The hope of scholars to find traces of such ancient times of human development will never be fulfilled, for man was then a being whose parts were still soft in substance. Such a body cannot be preserved, just as nothing will be found of today's mollusks after a hundred years. Animal remains can still be found from such ancient periods, because animals were already hardened when humans were still soft. Animals entered matter too early; they could not wait. The earliest human forms, which became physical too early, gave rise to the most stunted human formations. The noblest remained at the top the longest, remaining soft; they waited until they no longer fell into a time when they would have had to remain at a stage of hardening, as was the case with animals. Animals remained at a rigid, hardened stage because they could not wait.
We have described the development of the earth up to the point where the forces of water were unleashed and the ancient Atlantis was destroyed. The people who saved themselves from Atlantis migrated to America on the one hand, and to what is now Europe, Asia, and Africa on the other. These migrations, great migratory movements, took place over long periods of time.
Now let us take another look at the ancient Atlantean culture. In the earliest Atlantean period, human beings possessed powerful magical forces. With these forces, they controlled the powers of seeds, controlled the forces of nature, and were still able to see into the spiritual world to a certain extent. Gradually, clairvoyance fell dormant, because human beings were supposed to establish the Earth's culture; they were supposed to truly descend to Earth. Thus, at the end of Atlantis, there were two types of people within all the peoples and races: first, clairvoyants, great magicians who stood at the height of Atlantean culture and who could work through magical powers and see into the spiritual world. Alongside them were those who were preparing to found the present human race. They already had the predisposition for the abilities of present-day human beings. They could no longer achieve anything in the sense of the ancient Atlanteans, but they prepared the intelligence and the power of judgment. They possessed the beginnings of arithmetic, counting, combining, and so on. They were the ones who developed today's intelligence, but they no longer used the magical powers that the ancient Atlantean magicians had used at a time when their application was already dangerous because of the great Ahrimanic influence. They were the “others,” the despised ones, much like today's theosophists who unite in small conventicles, or like the first Christians in ancient Rome who gathered in catacombs.
Now, in Atlantis there were also powerful centers of culture and worship—we will call them the Atlantean oracles—where what is known as Atlantean wisdom was cultivated. Since the souls of human beings were different, having descended from different heavenly bodies, there had to be different oracle sites for different kinds of people. There was a Mars oracle, a Jupiter oracle, a Venus oracle, and so on. Such oracles existed. They were leading places of worship where the initiates, the wise men up to a certain level, the Mars race, the Jupiter race, and so on, guided and directed. But all these oracles were in turn guided by a more powerful oracle, the Sun Oracle. This was the leading mystery center from which culture emanated for the others. In addition, all Mars people were guided by the place where the initiate of the Mars oracle lived with his disciples; all Mercury souls by the Mercury oracle, all Jupiter souls by the Jupiter oracle, and so on. But all these oracle sites were subject to the great initiate of the Sun Oracle.
This great leader of the Sun Oracle, the greatest initiate of Atlantis, directed his attention everywhere to those strata of people who differed from the common population of ancient Atlantis. These were simple people who no longer possessed any magical powers; the great initiate gathered these despised people who had developed new abilities, albeit primitive ones, and from whom an understanding of the new era could be expected. He took the good material for the future, including those old initiates or magicians who did not cling selfishly to the old ways. We can compare our present time, which offers a similar picture to that of Atlantis, with the time back then. Today, too, there are those who set the tone in the prevailing culture, who are magicians of a kind, working only with the inorganic, and on the other hand there are those who are despised, who want to work for the future, even today. Back then, in Atlantis, the members of their culture, the old magicians, also looked down with contempt on the small number of people who had developed the new ability within themselves, an ability that was of no use in ancient Atlantis. Only the great initiate of the Sun Oracle did not despise them. And so today, the great bearers of our culture look down on a small group of people, the theosophists, who gather in small conventicles and do all sorts of crazy things, who are generally laymen and who are supposed to bring about the future. They are the people who are developing and preparing within themselves a capacity that seems useless to others, but which is suitable for creating a connection with the spiritual world again, based on a sense of the future. Back then in Atlantis, the task was to find the connection with the physical world, with the senses; today, the task is to rediscover the spiritual. And just as in those days the old initiates gathered their followers locally and sent out their call to the despised and the simple, so today, under different conditions, a call is going out, not locally, from the great masters of wisdom, who are pouring a certain spiritual treasure of wisdom into humanity. And those who are predisposed to do so in a certain way follow this call, just as those in former times were predisposed to develop the primitive qualities of calculation, counting, and so on. These teachings are not given merely to enable the intellect to grasp theosophical dogmas, but to enable the heart to grasp them. This gives one the power to know why Theosophy is here today. It is here to meet a great demand of human evolution. And those who know this also find the strength to overcome resistance, whatever may come; they follow their path because they know that what must happen must happen through Theosophy for the further development of humanity on the spiritual path.
The great initiate of the Sun Oracle led the small group and formed a kind of cultural center in Asia. He drew these people to himself in a certain way so that they could establish the post-Atlantean culture. During the great migrations, everything that had been created in Atlantis had been thrown together and mixed up. Therefore, in the post-Atlantean period, one should no longer speak of races, but of cultures.
Now let us consider the cultures that followed one another in the post-Atlantean period. The first culture is the ancient Indian culture. A strange mixture of peoples had survived the Atlantean catastrophe and gathered together in ancient India. The people who lived there still had the deepest, most eminent longing for the spiritual world, from which they knew they had been born and which they had now lost. The great initiate of the Sun Oracle sent the seven holy Rishis there. The Indians felt this with painful longing: the sensory world is false, only the world from which we descended, the spiritual world, is true. It was therefore easy for the holy Rishis to teach what they had to say about the wisdom of the primordial world and the mysteries to those who still had a longing for the spiritual world within them. Maya, or illusion, the great deception, was the sensory world for the ancient Indians.
It was already a different spirit that reigned in the second post-Atlantean culture, the ancient Persian culture. Western thinking and Western research in the physical realm are learning to recognize that this physical world, this world built according to such harmonious laws, is worthy of being penetrated by the spirit. The people of Zarathustra were a people who had an inkling of this. Anyone who knows this ancient Persian people will be able to distinguish precisely between them and the people of India. Maya, illusion, was everything that surrounded them; only the spiritual world, imbued with the highest Self, was true and desirable to them. With such a mindset, it was impossible to conquer the physical world. This was only possible with the culture of Zarathustra, the great disciple of the great initiate of the Sun Oracle. He knew and taught that the outer world is not Maya, but the expression of a divine spirit, that behind it lies what Ahriman had concealed from human beings. This, which lies behind the sensory world, had to be revealed. This is what Zarathustra works toward: finding the spirit in the sensory world. That is his mission. In Ormuzd and Ahriman, light and darkness stand opposed to each other.
In the third epoch, the Egyptian-Chaldean-Assyrian-Babylonian, humans had already found more connection to the physical world. In the mighty star writing of the firmament, he sees the deeds and wisdom of the gods engraved, and he turns his gaze upward and seeks to understand and fathom them. The wonderful star wisdom of the Chaldean priestly sages is a monument to this.
The fourth culture, the Greek-Roman, brings man completely down to the physical plane. He has now grown so fond of it that he has completely forgotten where he came from. He has lost his understanding of the spiritual world. This is deeply reflected in the saying of the Greek hero Achilles: Better to be a beggar in the upper world than a king in the realm of shadows. The wonderful sculptures of the Greeks and the Roman citizens are the characteristic features of this culture. The fifth culture is ours. Materialism and the department store have left their mark on it.
The meaning of all these cultures is that more and more of the physical plane is being conquered by human beings, and two currents, two basic moods, are expressed in the cultures that have survived to this day. Today, the Eastern and Western worlds, with their views and emotional currents, stand opposite each other. The Eastern world calls the physical plane Maja or illusion, and it does not want to become entangled with it in its thinking, actions, and emotional life. Working into this sensory world, laying hands on it, is the principle of the Western worldview. Outwardly, this may lead to a collision, but each has its full justification. May the Western world work its way into the outer culture and thus unfold the powers of the soul, and may the Eastern world go its own way: the summit will bring them both together.
Thus we have the Indian, who leads a spiritual life within himself, turned away from the outer sensory world, and the Persian, who still sees something hostile in matter, but is already working the spirit into it. We have the Egyptian who studies their laws, the Chaldean who sees in the course of the stars the handwriting of God in space, who reveres the wisdom of the stars as an expression of divine-spiritual beings. Before us stands the Greek, who understood how to imprint on matter itself the ideal of beauty and perfection that nature had created; with him came the time when we could marvel at the marriage between spirit and matter in the physical wonders of art. A deep occult background should be mentioned here. Consider the Greek temple in its magnificent purity and beauty: God truly dwells within it. The essential difference between these works of architecture and sculpture and those of other cultural epochs is that the Greek temple, in its pure form, is so high in the perfection of its lines from a purely architectural and artistic point of view that nothing can equal it. If the soul delves into it—you can still perceive this in the ruins of the temple at Paestum—and contemplates a Doric temple, an Ionic temple, and has something within itself that is called spatial awareness, it senses how these lines are literally poured into space. You know that certain currents exist in space. Using the necessity of these currents, representing them physically, the Greek temple takes shape. What it already finds in space, the Greek creates in space. In the Greek temple, the main thing is that God himself is inside; the Gothic cathedral belongs to the faithful community. The Greek temple is a whole in itself; the Gothic cathedral with its pointed arches is only conceivable with the congregation, whose devoutly folded hands reflect its forms and together with it form a whole. In the Greek temple, spirituality was truly present; it gave spirit beings an opportunity to descend and take up residence there.
But in this age, which understood so well how to adorn the earth with such marvels, people increasingly lost their connection with the spiritual world. The physical world was light and bright for human beings, but when they passed through death, the spiritual world was desolate, cold, and dark for them during the Greek-Latin culture. Humans had conquered the physical world in the post-Atlantean era, but in the spiritual world it was sad and gloomy for them, and even the initiates, who are teachers of humanity here and there, could offer no comfort. For when they told those who were in the life between death and a new birth about what was happening in the physical world, those human souls became even more unhappy, because they were attached with every fiber of their souls to this sensual world that had now been taken from them. A change also occurred here through the event of Golgotha and the appearance of Christ Jesus on earth. After his death on the cross, he descended into the underworld—this is called the descent into hell—and he also proclaimed to those who no longer lived in the physical body that life had truly conquered death. This gave the souls the opportunity to ascend again into the spiritual world.
