Barr (Alsace), September 8, 1906 Dear Mr. Wagner! It is true that the two meditations generally follow one another; but in your case it was intended that the second (written) meditation should follow on directly from the first meditation each day. However, if that is too much, then it would be good to do what is written in the hectographed instructions in the morning and then to follow the written instructions during the course of the day as a kind of preparation. This would help you to make faster progress.1 Even if you do it in the evening before going to sleep, it will do what you need to do to help you get a good night's sleep. Now, with regard to this calm before sleep, the best thing is the following. At the moment when you are seeking sleep and cannot find it, try to think quite vividly of your feet and, as if you were transferring your entire consciousness to your feet, think the word “My life force” into them. It will not take long for sleep to come. It is only necessary that the whole process should proceed as inwardly freely as possible, so that at every moment the imagination can transform itself into the absence of imagination. Kind regards, Dr. Rudolf Steiner
- 1. The “hectographed instruction” is the main exercise I in “Instructions for an Esoteric Training”, formerly GA 245 (now special edition), intended for GA 267. - The “written instruction” was an exercise given personally to Günther Wagner.
