98. Nature and Spirit Beings — Their Effects in Our Visible World: Group Souls of Animals, Plants, and Minerals II 02 Feb 1908, Heidelberg
Translated by Antje Heymanns

Rudolf Steiner
The substances of the Earth had to become firm and crystallise together. This process has been undergone on Earth. In the future, the Earth will go through this process in reverse. The Earth and all human beings will spiritualise themselves.
That which changes the Earth, is what we make ourselves in between death and a new birth, but certainly under the guidance of higher beings. Thus, the clairvoyant sees the plants continually buzzing with the souls of humans, who are preparing the bed for their new incarnation.
In this context, a wonderful life on this Earth comes together for us when we look at the Earth in its entirety. This is also how we recognise that we live under the guidance of higher beings who are in contact with our Earth, but who do not descend as far as to a physical incarnation.

Rudolf Steiner
We see how in the plant, growth leaf by leaf is repeated. Why? Because underlying this repetition is the power of the etheric body. In a human being too, this principle of the etheric body holds sway.
Thus, one could actually track the collaboration of the etheric with the astral everywhere in the world. Underlying this is a mystery, namely the secret that everything alive must be dampened, or, as it were, killed by the astral.
If you put this together with the current state, then you will understand how you have lived on the old Sun. Your life consisted only of a physical and an etheric body.

Rudolf Steiner
If a human being knows such things, he gains an understanding of what he is doing to his fellow human beings when he forces them to breathe in all sorts of horrible perfumes.
4 He did not know anything about all these things, but in his naive way, he tells very nicely how such things played out at a certain small Court, at which at the time a sensational catastrophe had happened. There was a female personality, who understood all the arts of influencing people through scents. When the minister appeared before the Queen5 in question, all sorts of perfumes would waft towards him, and so he knew he had to leave because she understood something about the use of scents.
The individual doesn’t really live as an individual. And you should understand that you cannot simply help an individual. Imagine a person who lives in a marshy area; he can only become healthy once he leaves the marshy area.

Rudolf Steiner
No matter how far we cast a glance back, we always do this with the intention of precisely understanding human nature. This forces us to look at the evolutionary history of our own nature from many different angles.
Under the influence of the music of the spheres, the Earth’s substances begin to dance. This is the differentiation of substances into purely organic substances, for example, into protein.
The external fire emerged at the end of the Moon stage. What arose under the influence of this physical combustion, is understood best if one were to look at a burning physical corpse.

Translated by Antje Heymanns

Rudolf Steiner
Although it is possible to combine some sort of religious feeling, a kind of dark religious sentiment, with the immediate ascent from human being to deity, but it is never possible to arrive in this way at a real understanding of the world; a true picture of the evolution of the world can never be combined with this. For this reason, humanity has now lost its understanding of the world.
From human beings, they have evolved higher. Knowing this it is easy to understand that man also is on the way to becoming such a higher being himself and will be one on Jupiter.
The sciences appear. The human being not only understands the world as his working field, but he searches for its laws. The Egyptians discover geometry.
98. Nature and Spirit Beings — Their Effects in Our Visible World: Elemental Beings and other Higher Spiritual Beings 14 Jun 1908, Munich
Translated by Antje Heymanns

Rudolf Steiner
Not until we know a human being’s soul, will we begin to understand him fully by his physiognomy. We will then know how to interpret his gaze and explain his facial expressions.
We can point to elemental beings, which make life even more understandable to us. An inducement for the manifestation of certain beings is given where metal lies and overlaps next to the ordinary realm of the Earth.
How thousands of them were buried there. Hidden were those who were implanting underneath the surface of the Earth a new spiritual culture into humanity. While up above, imperial Rome acted as is well known.
98. Nature and Spirit Beings — Their Effects in Our Visible World: About the beings that influence human beings 24 Feb 1908, Hanover
Translated by Antje Heymanns

Rudolf Steiner
It reflects the actions of the mysterious beings and powers, how they influence the plants; each plant only grows under special conditions, so that in accordance with the ground and soil specific types of people, communities and tribes can form itself.

We can understand such things in the best way, if we proceed from what we can perceive through our senses—from the kingdom of the sense-world, which are accessible to human observation.
It is admitted of course, that it is not possible to understand a clock at once, but the world, people believe, can be understood without any further trouble. If we wish to grasp the Divine, infinite patience is needed for the Divine contains everything. In order to understand the world, people wish to apply the simplest concepts, but this is simply laziness ... no matter how reverently the soul may say it.

There are many features in this legend which lead us a long way towards understanding the Christ-principle, and what it is to bring about in the world. Among its profound features are the Adoration and the Presentation by the three Magi, the three Oriental Kings, and only with the deepest understanding may we approach this fundamental symbolism of the Christian tradition.
All those who have understood Christianity in this way have seen in it the profound idea in spiritual science of the unification of religions.
And round the Cross he sees the Triangle shine, radiating beams like the sun. There is no need for him to understand in ideas the meaning of this profound symbol. The experience and understanding of it live already in his soul, in his ripe soul.
98. The Group Souls of Animals, Plants and Minerals 02 Feb 1908, Frankfurt
Translated by Violet E. Watkin

Rudolf Steiner
The part of the plant that springs up out of the earth, what from within the earth strives up to the surface, is of a different nature from what is growing under the earth. There is a difference between the cutting off of blossoms, stalk, leaves, and the tearing up of a root.
These mysteries have always been made known to the people by the seers, out of the secret writings of their ancient religious records; but people have lost the capacity for understanding them. Let us think ourselves back into long past ages of our earth evolution. We see rocky masses of mountains, heaped up in layers of clay, basalt, and so on; and as we go further and further back we find everything on earth becoming softer.
It is indeed sad when those whose very calling should entail the upholding of them, make no effort to study, and have no will to understand, their meaning. Present-day arrogance, summed up in the words: “We have made such wonderful progress”—this must all go.
